1. ^ From 1972 to 1996 the class system was organized into AA, A, B, C, 9-man, with AA being the largest school. In 1997 the class system changed the B and C classes to 2A and 1A respectively and added a new class, 5A, which includes the largest schools. In 2012 a new class was added for the largest schools 6A. Since 1982 all championship games have been held in Minneapolis, under the title Prep Bowl (Metrodome 1982-2013, TCF Bank Stadium 2014-2015, U.S. Bank Stadium 2016-).
