Four separate and distinct state universities are located in Houston.
The University of Houston is the flagship institution of the University of Houston System. The University of Houstonâ"Clear Lake and the University of Houstonâ"Downtown are stand-alone universities; they are not branch campuses of the University of Houston.
Admission into each institution is separate, and each institution has distinct admission criteria and requirements.
Texas Southern University is the only independent state university in Houston and is the largest historically black university in Texas.
